A TOWN will play host to a torchlight procession to mark the start of their carnival.

Lyme Regis Carnival Week will kick off on Saturday, August 6 at 9pm with the Lyme Regis Torchlight Procession starting at the entrance to the Langmoor and Lister Gardens.

Participants will walk with flaming torches through the gardens down onto the sandy beach where a ring of fire will be formed. Torchbearers will then cast their torches to ignite a giant beacon on the beach.

A spokesperson said: "Join in this iconic event as participants walk with flaming torches through Langmoor Gardens down to the seafront and on to the sandy beach where a ring of fire is formed before the torches are used to light a giant beacon.

"We'd love to see as many people as possible join the procession as torchbearers or just come along and watch this wonderful spectacle from the gardens or along the seafront."

Torches are available online for £5 each via the Regatta & Carnival website. Light LED foam batons for children under 16 cost £3. The number of torches are limited.
