A MEMORIAL concert in Bridport honoured the life of a well-loved local figure.

The event in honour of Robert 'Bill' Carr was held on Wellfields Drive in Bradpole on Sunday close to his home, and raised a total of £175 for charitable causes.

Mr Carr died on April 30 aged 77. An event to remember him and raise money for causes that Mr Carr was known to support was organised by his good friend Jeff Latter, who plays drums in The Silver Lining Band.

The band performed on the day, playing to a crowd of friends, family and the community.

Music played included some of Mr Carr's favourite tunes, with songs from Eagles, The Beatles, The Shadows, The Kinks, Gerry and the Pacemakers, and more.

People were invited to make a donation and cakes made by Gill Thompson and sold for a small donation boosted the coffers.

The event supported the Dorset and Somerset Air Ambulance, Macmillan Cancer Support and Julia's House, with a raffle for Weldmar Hospicecare.

Mr Carr, who worked as a service engineer, had lived in Bridport for the past 30 years. He spent much of his time working in the community to help out and fix problems.

The event was attended by an estimated 80 people, including Mr Carr's partner of 31 years Elaine Buchanan, and other family members such as his grandchildren.

Elaine said: "Bill was always fixing problems, like taps and washers, any odd job you can name, he was always willing to help everybody."

She added: "It was lovely seeing people come out into the community to honour Bill and enjoy the excellent music.

"I liked all the songs; it was really my and Bill's era of music. Bill would have loved the concert, if he listened up there he would have been dancing away.

"Jeff's speech midway through about Bill was lovely, I am so grateful to him for arranging the concert, it was such a good idea.

"It's really great that this money could be raised for charity, it's the kind of thing Bill would do.

"Thank you to everyone who came down, it was lovely to see everyone, raise some money for charity and commemorate Bill, and a big thank you to the The Silver Lining Band for putting it all together."

Jeff Latter said: "I am glad that the family and everyone who attended the event enjoyed it, and that we managed to raise money for charity."
