ORGANISERS of Bridport Carnival are urging people to take part in this year’s parade - and also to sign up as 'carnival royalty'.

Following the success of the jubilee pageant, organisers are hoping that the carnival parade taking place on Saturday, August 20 will be just as creative.

Entries do not have to be staged on a lorry, it can be as simple as just walking with the opportunity to advertise a business, club or group.

A spokesman for Bridport Carnival said: “This is a community event, put on for the community by the community.

“It's also a rite of passage for all youngsters - something that should be undertaken at least once.”

Carnival organisers are also looking for children aged 8-16 to enter a ‘Young Royalty’ competition that will see winners take part in a number of prestigious events throughout the year.

The first of which will see them leading Bridport Carnival on the Royal Float and the Torchlight Procession which will return this year on Sunday, August 21 starting in Bucky Doo Square, and finishing with dancing on East Beach, West Bay, and a magnificent firework display.

The winners of the competition will receive monetary prizes and would be provided with appropriate apparel for them to wear on 'official' engagements.

The selection will take place on Sunday, June 26 at 4pm at the Ivy House Kitchen at Groves Nurseries, West Bay Road, Bridport.

They will be crowned at an event on Monday, August 15.

Other events set to take place that same week include a quiz at the Ropemakers in West Street, on Tuesday 16 at 7.30pm.

There's a chance to win prizes at the bingo, on the Wednesday 17 at 7.30pm at Bridport Football Club.

On the night of Friday 19, a darts and skittles evening will take place at the Beehive at 7.00pm.
