Youth creativity is being celebrated at a new community event coming to Bridport organised by young people.

Plottingham Fields will see an explosion of creative activity on Saturday, June 11 as young people from Bridport Youth Centre put on an event that will involve street art, street dance, DJing, music composition, singing, recording and producing and podcasting.

The Plott Festival, as it is known, will also have open mic slots and free food.

Funded by the the Let’s Create Jubilee Fund and led by the Lyric Theatre, the aim of the project is to build on the Rights Respecting Town Charter principles for young people where their rights to be creative and express themselves are promoted and championed.

The project is creating opportunities for them to take an active role in coordinating a celebration of youth creativity paving the way for them to be co-leaders for future events.

It is described as an exciting opportunity for young people to speak up and claim space in the town. Led by a steering group of young people, the day will celebrate the creativity, identities and voices of young people in Bridport.

Project organiser Rosie Russell said: “The young people of Bridport are our future and this festival presents a wonderful opportunity for them to take a leading role in the culture of Bridport. Big thanks to Bridport Town Council and the Youth Centre who have been right behind the project and given a lot of support.”

Everyone is invited to join in the event and take the opportunity to creatively express their views of how Bridport’s communities can support young people to thrive and be themselves.

Alani Cook and Amber Adams, two of the young people on the steering group organising the event said: “There are lots of ways people can get involved. We have a podcasting shed where people can come and express their thoughts and we’ll also be inviting ideas for designs for the street art, which will be installed later on in the summer in Plottinghan Fields.

“It would be fantastic to see lots of people down here on the 11th joining in the event together.”

Banner making workshops have been held at the Youth Centre in the lead up to the event where young people have had the chance to get creative and express their thoughts.

The Let’s Create Jubilee Fund will ensure that thousands of people from communities all across England will have the opportunity to take part in exciting creative events, administered by UK Community Foundations on behalf of the Arts Council, it will support a huge range of projects throughout England.

The event will take place between 12-6pm on Saturday, June 11 at Plottingham Fields next to the bus station. For more information call Rosie on 07753 836809.
