TO MARK the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee a Bridport area estate is opening to the wider community - and has placed what could be the biggest Union Flag in Dorset.
Symondsbury Estate has a long-standing history of supporting national events and local charities such as lighting Colmers Hill pink for Breast Cancer Awareness, blue to support the NHS and bringing Gaia ‘to remind all of us how precious our environment is and how beautiful the world we live in can be’.
Now, they say the Queen’s Jubilee is no exception. They have draped a huge Union Flag, which measures at 11 metres by seven metres, at Colmers Hill until the end of the Jubilee celebrations.
Made by their very own Alice Tuck, with a little bit of help from her mum Eira, Ms Tuck said: “It seemed great, but a crazy idea to make a flag this big, but we want everyone to be able to see it as they drive through Bridport towards Colmers Hill.
“At one point, I didn’t think I’d manage to finish it, but with some help from my mu, we’ve done it. It looks fantastic.”
Julia Colfox, part owner of Symondsbury Estate, said: “Alice has gone above and beyond in making this fabulous Union Flag and, unlike out promotional corgis which were obviously irresistible to passers-by and quickly disappeared, we figure the flag is big enough to be safe and hope it will make everyone smile and reflect for a moment on our wonderful Queen, her extraordinary life of service and all she continues to stand for.”
The Symondsbury Estate will open its doors to the wider community today (Thursday June 2) to celebrate the Platinum Jubilee in style where there will be something for the whole family to enjoy. There will be a traditional street party on the café terrace – where there will be live music from Harvey Causley, children’s entertainment from Strawberry Jam, Punch and Judy, and village-fete games and competitions such as skittles, coconut shy and Giant Jenga.
Keeping in with British tradition there will also be a Pimms bar and a Cake and Cream Tea stall. Entry is free for the event which takes place from 11am-4pm. There is a £3 car parking fee with proceeds going to local charities.
