THE new-look Bridport Community Charter Fair is gearing up to become once again one of the town’s major events.

Re-locating from the town centre to Mountfield’s Millennium Green, the involvement of community groups has almost trebled, with 44 organisations now taking part in the event. It is to be held on Saturday, May 14 running from 9.30am-3.30pm.

As reported, in a new initiative designed to ensure the future and further development of Bridport’s most historic event, organisers of the Charter Fair have entered into a partnership with Bridport Town Council towards creating Bridport Community Charter Fair. It coincides with the Love Your Market initiative.

Organisers say this makes sense given that for years the Charter Fair has commemorated and celebrated the granting by King Henry III in 1253 of a charter giving Bridport the right to hold a weekly market – a market now recognised nationally, and described locally as 'the heart of Bridport'.

Bridport and Lyme Regis News:

Giving an update, Charter Fair chairman Arthur Woodgate said amongst those providing entertainment for this free community event will be the Bridport Choral Society, Bridport Musical Theatre, Bridport Young Performers, Chloe Rainey, Dan Shakell and Sue Smith, Phoenix Youth Band, Rough Assembly, and Shiraz.

After an absence of some years the traditional crowning of the May Queen will accompany Maypole Dancing on the Green.

The Jurassic Fields Music Festival will be providing the beer tent, whilst an array of refreshments will be presented by both the Bridport and the Brit Valley Rotary Clubs.

The Charter Fair Trophy will be presented by the mayor, together with the annual 'Above and Beyond' Award. The recipients of these awards will be announced nearer the date of the event.

The Bridport Community Charter Fair is a partnership between Bridport Town Council, Bridport Charter Fair, Bridport Rights Respecting, Bridport Community Fair and the national (and now international) 'Love Your Local Market' event.
