THE people of Bridport and the surrounding area have continued with their valiant efforts to help people in Ukraine impacted by the Russian invasion by donating vast quantities of aid.

Last week alone two more vans rammed full of supplies departed for the Poland-Ukraine border, and a convoy of four headed to Romania.

Another artic lorry full of aid set off on Monday of this week less than a week after the first one returned from eastern Europe.

“Everything has been great so far and we just need to keep it coming, it has been a brilliant effort by all the volunteers,” said Claire Nuttall, of Bridport Music Centre, and one of those coordinating Bridport’s efforts.

“Most of the donations have been really good and going out there, anything else is being sold off for Ukraine funds.

“We’re looking for everything in terms of supplies that will keep them going but especially medical supplies, children and babies clothes, and the new one is buggies.”

Upon returning from a trip delivering aid on the first artic lorry Gary Copp, of Catch of the Day in West Bay, said he had seen a lot of parents with young children who were 'desperate' for buggies.

Ms Nuttall continued: “Gary said when he went out there they needed buggies because many of them are ditching them to cross the border but then needing them because the younger children get tired and cannot be carried far.

“My partner got back on Sunday and he is going out again this time to Romania so we have been frantically packing.

“We’re sending the aid to help 5-16-year-old children who have arrived in Romania without any parents or guardians, so currently we are sorting through all the boxes we can send out there.”

Ms Nuttall had put a call-out requesting to borrow a van for five days to deliver aid to Romania after being contacted by a volunteer out there who says the country is trying to ‘cope with a massive influx of children with no parents and are desperate for supplies'.

“Two vans left early last week, both heading for Romania and then on Thursday we had a convoy of four going to our drop-off point in Poland," she added.

“We’re looking for everything in terms of supplies that will keep them going but especially medical supplies, children and babies clothes, and the new one is buggies.”

Currently, people can drop aid off at Bridport Music Centre between 10am-1pm, Parkdean Resorts' swimming pool at the West Bay resort and Rise Bakery between 9am-5pm, and the telephone box in South Street, Bridport at anytime.
