STUDENTS in Bridport have been fundraising and also helping in the local effort for the Ukraine Appeal.

Students from Toro, one of Sir John Colfox Academy’s four houses, raised £1,000 from a fundraising event which included a cake sale, games, face painting and other fun activities.

Julia May, Head of Toro House, said: “Our students were delighted to raise so much for the Ukraine Appeal. They worked hard organising activities and games, making posters and baking cakes – it was a terrific effort.

“Thanks to everyone who generously supported the day and helped make it a success.”

Colfox Academy is also stepping in and accepting and sorting donations, and working with volunteer groups who are sending aid to help those who have had to flee the war. Students are volunteering to help, sort, pack and label donations.

Headteacher Adam Shelley said: “Well done to our students who worked hard to raise £1,000 for the Ukraine Appeal, it was great to see so much generosity from our whole school community.

“I am also pleased that we are able to support local volunteer groups in our community, who are working hard to send aid to Poland to help those arriving from Ukraine. I am very proud of our students for volunteering to process these donations, this is a great opportunity to take positive action. I’d like to thank my colleague Katie Wilkinson for co-ordinating these efforts."

Once goods have been processed, they will be delivered by school minibus to Cains Farm, which is sending a second lorry-load of donations later this month. Additional donations will be delivered to the Bridport-Ukraine Support group, who are arranging for them to be transported to areas where supplies are needed.

Katie Wilkinson, Higher Level Teaching Assistant, is co-ordinating the response.

Please donate quality items – clothes in particular should be in good condition and suitable for winter weather.

“We would also appreciate bulk donations of large, sturdy cardboard boxes to help us with packing. Please contact us before dropping these off.”
