'Limitless' at the Electric Palace

A live dance performance by Bridport Youth Dance, Luminous Youth Dance company and the BYD street dance crew

Review by Rachelle Green

Nikki Northover, Bec Ayles and their team again produced a wonderful Bridport Youth Dance show. ‘Limitless’ was professional, slick, well constructed, beautifully and thoughtfully choreographed and well rehearsed. I watched all three of the shows this year and I saw the transformation through each performance of the dancers' confidence as they took the stage and stretched into the space, expressing their love and passion for dance.

It has been a strange time with live dance being very sparse over the past two years. However, despite the lockdowns and Covid, the show at the Electric Palace was compelling. The eclectic mix of dance styles and content was well crafted and stunning to watch, coupled with the fusion of colour, each piece being beautifully lit by Matt Smee and Jake West. Each piece was swathed in different colours greens, blues, pinks and deep reds to highlight the emotion, dance style and experience for the audience.

The street dance pieces used torches and light effects in ‘Sky Full of Stars’ and visuals and props highlighting the energy and creativity of the street dance pieces this year. The tap pieces are always so technically articulate particularly ‘Blood on the Dance Floor’ with a lovely Michael Jackson twist into the choreography. The contemporary pieces were all so different, solos, duets and group work each one expressing a range of themes and ideas, each one with a powerful narrative and story of its own.

I particularly enjoyed the solo work of Reuben Squirrel, Louis Donovan and Daisy O’Leary.

The dancers' ability to communicate, connect, express themselves, their passion, emotions, intimacy and friendship grew through the weekend to a grand finale of flowing emotion on the Saturday night. What a privilege it is to watch all these young people develop, change and grow through this experience and as a mother of three boys at Bridport Youth Dance over the past 10 years, I have seen the power that dance has in the lives of young people.
