The annual town meeting due to take place this evening has been postponed following several reports of people who were planning on attending testing positive for Covid-19.

Bridport Town Council has announced that it would be postponing its annual town meeting which was due to take place at the Town Hall on Tuesday, March 22.

The town council have said that the event will still take place this year, but at a later date on or before June 1

A spokesman for Bridport Town Council said: "The Town Council has today received several reports of positive Covid-19 tests and close contacts, from people who would be attending our annual town meeting. Moreover, there appears to have been a general increase in the number of positive tests locally in recent days.

"Under the circumstances, the mayor and town clerk have decided not to risk holding an event that might exacerbate the situation, and so the meeting has been postponed. Under the law as it stands, we are not able to hold the meeting virtually, unfortunately.

"We will still hold the event at a later date, on or by June 1.

"Sincere apologies to those who were planning to attend, for the late notice. We trust you will appreciate our reasoning."
