EARLY stage proposals for a refresh of Bridport town centre streets have been unveiled.

The town council is looking to commission an urban design specialist to produce a streetscape and interpretation study, setting out actions to declutter the town centre and improve access for people with mobility issues, as well as branding and defining distinct 'quarters' of the town centre, taking into consideration special heritage assets.

The commission brief includes developing the popular street market and outdoor events; improving weather protection and resting points for shoppers; promoting low-carbon, natural materials, and delivering good value for money.

The aim is to create "a distinctive high quality physical environment that differentiates Bridport from other town centres in Dorset," the town council has said.

Part of the project will involve a consultation with the wider community, especially traders and businesses.

Meanwhile, a second study is required to define, guide and plan the heritage interpretation activities across the neighbourhood plan area. The strategy will draw on the results from the streetscape study and require extensive consultation with local parishes, voluntary groups and statutory agencies.

The combined results will help inform and shape the first review of the Bridport Area Neighbourhood Plan.

Expressions of interest are now invited from 'suitably experienced' consultancies before April 1.
