Stunning images including an unusual view of West Bay pier taken with a drone won awards in Bridport Camera Club’s Landscape Competition.

Entries were judged by Malcolm McNaughton, from neighbouring Dorchester Camera Club, who was looking for photographs with visual impact that communicated something about the landscape as well as showing technical skill.

His choice of winning images shows that the term ‘landscape’ is not just long views with a horizon and sky but can be quite intimate or abstract.

New member, Chris Barker, achieved an impressive 1st and 2nd plus two Highly Commended awards in Group B. ‘Pebbles, his unusual view of West Bay’s West Pier, is taken from his Mavic Air drone (for which he has an A2 CoC qualification) which he flew off the East Beach in November last year. The overcast sky was ideal for capturing the colours and details of the rocks.

Paul Barrow’s ‘Mere Downs’, above, awarded 2nd in Group A, highlights the patterns and contours of the downland in a semi-abstract form. Third place in Group A was taken by John Grindle’s ‘Gold’, below, an intimate view of Dorset woodland.

A spokesman for the club said: "The competition was held online due to the current Covid situation and digital images only could be entered.

"We hope that before too long we will be back at the Town Hall where we are looking forward seeing members’ photographic prints as well as meeting more sociably face to face. Whether meetings are online or in person, the club is always happy to welcome visitors for a £3 fee."

Full Results were: Group A: 1st. Carol Tritton, 2nd. Paul Barrow, 3rd. John Grindle, with Highly Commended going to Oran Balazs, John Grindle and Carol Tritton.
