DESPITE organisers declaring the event would be scrapped after 2019, a popular celebrity Christmas lights switch on in New Milton will return this weekend.

The Byron Road Christmas Lights event was held annually in the residential street and raised more than £80,000 for good causes from 2004 to 2019.

Thousands would attend the events, headlined over the years by names like Harry Redknapp, Fred Dinenage, Jimmy Tarbuck and was even featured in a Cadbury’s Christmas advert.

However, following the 2019 edition, the event was scrapped as it had become too expensive to hold – costing £1000 in insurance. There were also complaints from some residents that visitors had blocked streets and dropped litter.

Despite this, organiser Jason Dean has said the glittering event will return on Sunday, November 28.

EastEnders and Coronation Street star Michelle Collins will be turning on the lights at 5pm, with proceedings starting at 4pm.

This year’s event will raise money for the NHS.
