A RESTAURANT manager said staff have received 'overwhelming' support from all over the world after being forced to scrap a special value menu amid abuse from impatient elderly diners - but said the special deal would not be returning this year.

Management at Hive Beach Café, in Burton Bradstock, axed a popular pensioners' menu due to impatient elderly customers abusing staff last month.

But bosses said they had received 'amazing support' from well-wishers, with some customers apologising on behalf of their age group and letters being sent in from as far away as Mexico.

The temporary Silver Surfer menu provides three courses for £15 for people aged 55 and over and usually runs at the seafront restaurant between the end of September until November.

Restaurant manager Andrew Hartley said: "We have had an amazing response from customers and people from all over the world.

"With the story reaching national news back in October, we've since received letters of support from people as far as Mexico.

"We've had some elderly people apologise on behalf of their age group, but sadly we've not had any apologies from those responsible for the initial abuse."

Café supervisor Maisy Attrill had revealed that 10 members of staff received abuse from impatient elderly diners who had been asked to wait during busy hours, leading it to scrap its Silver Silver pensioners' special deal.

The popular discount menu is used as an incentive to bring in much-needed custom during quieter months.

The venue had considered bringing it back this month, but Mr Hartley confirmed it would not be returning until next year.

"The atmosphere in the restaurant has remained positive, so we're happy it's made a change in the right direction," said Mr Hartley.

"We've not got any plans to bring back the Silver Surfer menu because we're just taking our time as we enter the quieter months.

"I would like to thank everyone who has given us support during this period - it has been overwhelming."
