IN HIS letter in last week’s edition of the Bridport News, Councillor David Rickard, Leader of Bridport Town Council, sets out why that council would like to see the abolition of the parish councils of Allington, Bothenhampton and Waldich, and Bradpole.

He is dismissive of anyone holding an alternative view. However, he does not state the advantages of the existing arrangements, which focus on serving the different needs of each of the parishes.

Earlier this year I had the privilege of being co-opted on to Bradpole Parish Council, and I have been really impressed by the commitment and dedication of the councillors and clerks to serving the parish.

For example the green spaces for which the council is responsible are well maintained and a response is always quickly made when a resident contacts us about an issue, for instance a recent concern about a potentially dangerous tree.

Would an amalgamated council be able to deliver this same level of service to parish residents?

Why change a system which is meeting the needs of residents so well?
