BRIDPORT residents are being encouraged to take part in a campaign highlighting the need to action in regards the climate crisis.

A number of local groups are getting involved in the Great Big Green Week, a campaign which aims to draw attention to issues within nature and the climate.

Ahead of the United Nations climate change talks going ahead later this year, as many as 14 events are already planned for the Great Big Green Week, going ahead from Saturday, September 18 until Sunday, September 26.

West Dorset Friends of the Earth will be hosting the opening gathering at the Millennium Green on Saturday. The event will start at 10.30 with stalls, music and a picnic. There will also be speeches with the mayor of Bridport, Cllr Bark, making a proclamation and sending support to those meeting in Glasgow.

Events will be taking place throughout the week, including choir performances, the opportunity to ride electric bikes, plenty of discussions and talks on green and sustainable living, community singing, treasure hunts, the greener homes event, and more.

Dozens of volunteers have been planning the Big Green Day going ahead in Beaminster this Saturday, September 18.

The event will see displays and children's activities on the Square in Beaminster from 9am until midday and in Beaminster Public Hall from 10.30am until 2.30pm.

The aim of the event is to offer practical ideas to the residents of the town on how they can save or produce energy, reduce living costs, avoid plastic and other waste, cut carbon emissions, grow and enjoy low-cost healthy food, and look after wildlife.

On Thursday, September 23, local chef and Bridport Local Food Group committee member, Giles Smith, will be serving up dishes made from ingredients brought into the Bridport Garden Glut and Food Surplus Stall.
