DORSET Police have highlighted examples of what lost property should be reported to the force - and what should be reported to Dorset council.

It comes as police try to streamline their service in an attempt to guide the public of what lost property reports should be passed to police.

Police will only accept reports of items with internal memory such as laptops, personal ID including utility bills, drugs or hazardous substances, firearms or explosives, and significant amounts of cash.

A spokesman from Dorset Police said: "The police do not deal with lost property or provide a lost property reference number unless it is a 'hazardous item'.

"Examples of hazardous items include firearms, shotguns, ammunition, explosives, poisons or chemicals. For these, call 101 for advice on explosive or hazardous materials.

"Chemical disposal can be arranged with local authority and refuse centres.

"Call 999 if it is posing an immediate risk. If the item was lost on private property (including shops, restaurants or pubs) or on public transport (including taxis, trains or coaches), it is recommended that you contact the establishment, local authority or transport provider where the item was lost."
