THE SUN shone down on the return of Bridport's wackiest annual event this weekend.

The Bridport Hat Festival returned on Saturday, September 4 with an array of unique, colourful and creative headwear.

This year's hat festival was scaled down from previous events, taking the form of a garden party.

The sun was shining on Millennium Green and those in attendance basked in the festive atmosphere, which included music, dancing, a dog party and plenty of food and drink.

There was also a hat hurling challenge and a performance from hat juggler Joel Brooks.

It was the 11th instalment of the remarkable event, and residents were glad to see it back after the 2020 event was cancelled due to coronavirus.

Busy, but not overcrowded, a good natured and happy crowd spread across the the Millennium Green enjoying the return of the event.

Donation pots were dotted around the event on the day and more than £700 was raised for Brain Tumour Research and the Brain Injury Rehabilitation Trust.

The event begun with Bridport Town Crier John Collingwood, introducing deputy mayor Councillor Sarah Williams, followed by music and hat hurling, before the traditional mass photo at 1pm.

Organisers said the event went 'wonderfully' and they are looking forward to being able to stage a full hat festival next year.
