A BRIDPORT landmark is lighting up red to raise awareness of leukaemia.

Bridport Town Hall clock will be turning red this weekend to mark World Leukaemia Day.

The clock face is one of many landmarks across the country which will be lit up red on Saturday, September 4 to raise awareness as part of the Spot Leukaemia campaign.

National blood cancer charity Leukaemia Care has organised the lighting of buildings across the UK to raise awareness of the signs and symptoms of leukaemia.

A total of 28 buildings in total will be lighting up red to mark the 28 people who are diagnosed with leukaemia in the UK every day.

Leukaemia is a form of blood cancer and has a significantly higher rate of emergency diagnosis, averaging at 42 per cent more than the overall cancer average, 21 per cent.

Zack Pemberton-Whiteley, CEO of Leukaemia Care, said, “We’re delighted that Bridport Town Hall Clock Face is lighting red on the 4th of September for World Leukaemia Day to help raise awareness.

"This is part of our ongoing efforts to ensure that people can spot leukaemia. Leukaemia can be hard to spot because the signs and symptoms are common to other unrelated illnesses. Early diagnosis saves lives.”

Emergency diagnosis is associated with a reduced prospect of survival and there are nearly 5000 deaths attributed to leukaemia every two years in the UK. World Leukaemia Day (WLD) takes place every September 4th and is a chance for patients, charities and healthcare professionals to raise awareness and share stories of their experience of blood cancer.
