RE: Pedestrianise part of South Street. May I add to the correspondence on this pressing issue?
Regarding Malcolm Heaver’s letter (Postbag 8th July) calling for the top half of South Street to be pedestrianised - a very sensible solution to the town’s traffic problems!
This is not the first occasion this suggestion has been put forward and it is time for the talking to stop and positive action taken.
Mr Heaver, in his letter, presents the facts clearly and his reasons for the closing of the road from the Town Hall to the junction of Gundry Lane with South Street.
With the coming of the development of Vearse Farm with some 760 new homes generating extra traffic movements can only put additional cars on our roads causing constant traffic congestion and disruption; and whilst dealing with the town’s traffic problem, alighting from Downes Street turning right into East Street across the flow of vehicles from West Street should be done away with: two solutions for keeping traffic moving more freely!
Closing South Street has been a controversial issue but is, nevertheless, one that I see will mitigate the problem.
