A WOMAN was taken to hospital after she slipped and injured her ankle climbing out of a boat.

West Bay Coastguard Rescue Team responded to reports of an injured 52-year-old woman at West Bay Harbour at 1.36pm on Monday afternoon (August 23).

The woman and her husband had been ascending the steps from the boat pontoons in the outer harbour, but slipped and suffered a suspected broken right ankle.

Upon arrival, members from the coastguard saw the woman at the bottom of the steps being treated by harbour staff and a RNLI lifeguard.

The woman's injured ankle was secured using splint and fracture straps as coastguard crews saw that the tide was coming in.

She was carried onto a stretcher and moved off the steps and up to the Harbour Master's office.

Following assessment by an ambulance crew, the woman was helped to her vehicle where her husband drove her to Dorset County Hospital for further treatment.

A spokesman for West Bay Coastguard thanked staff at West Bay Harbour for their help as well as RNLI lifeguards.

He said: "Have a fantastic time at the coast this Summer. But If you find yourself in difficulty, or if you see something that gives you cause for concern then do not hesitate.

"Dial 999 and ask for the coastguard."
