DISASTER was avoided after a fire alarm alerted the fire service to a kitchen blaze in Lyme Regis.
A crew from Lyme Regis Fire Station arriving at the scene of a cooker fire in Anning Road called for backup from two additional crews, after the brigade was alerted to the incident at around 4.09pm yesterday.
A spokesman for Dorset & Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service said: "Further resources were requested by our Lyme Regis crew after they were mobilised to an alarm activating and discovered smoke in the property.
"These crews came from Charmouth and Colyton. The fire involved a cooker and was extinguished using small tools and removal."
Households are being urged to be vigilant following a series of kitchen fires around Dorset over the last few days.
"More than half of accidental fires in the home start in the kitchen – it is far too easy to be distracted whilst cooking and then leave things unattended," a spokesman added.
