FIREFIGHTERS were called to the A35 yesterday afternoon after a pile of dumped rubbish was set alight near the main road.

A fire crew from Bridport was called at 4.52pm yesterday and extinguished the blaze using one hose reel jet and a hay drag.

A spokesman for Bridport Fire Station said: "One appliance from Bridport was mobilised to a fire on the A35 towards Dorchester where the old service station used to be. Crews found the gates had been forced open and multiple piles of rubbish and garden waste had been dumped. One of these piles had been set on fire.

"Crews used one hose reel jet and a hay drag to extinguish the fire. This unattended fire had the potential to set fire to the surrounding hedge and with the wind, blow smoke across the main road causing a hazard to motorists.

"If you're having a clear out always make sure who ever is removing your rubbish is reputable and are disposing of your waste correctly.
