A CAMPAIGN to bring a refugee family to Bridport has taken another step closer to becoming reality after reaching a fundraising target.

The Bridport Refugee Support Campaign (BRSC) has raised a further £5,000 through a Crowdfunder campaign.

The money raised will allow the group to become a part of the government's Community Sponsorship Scheme for refugees.

As part of the scheme, the group must secure local authority consent to resettle the family, find affordable housing, arrange tuition, support towards independence and raise £15,000.

The scheme is a safe and legal route to resettlement for refugees escaping from countries affected by war, persecution or natural disaster. It was created with an aim to help refugee families become valued members of their new community.

The money raised will also towards finding affordable, safe, and dignified housing for the family, including decorating and furnishing and will cover the initial rent deposit.

It will also pay for transport to and from English classes, supplement the classes with personal tuition by volunteers and provide any other support materials.

The BRSC, a group of Bridport residents who want to help a refugee family rebuild their lives and settle safely in the town, is now attempting to reach its stretch target of £8,000.

The stretch campaign will cover any potential additional costs that come with bringing a refugee family into a new country.
