AS GARDENERS know, good design, with structure, bring year round interest to our gardens.

Wild flower meadows are beautiful and attractive to wildlife but have a brief flowering period.

They are not created by leaving patches of scrubland to grow rank weeds and brambles. We present a poor and scruffy welcome to visitors to our town.

Suitable sculptures (letters 22 July) if set amongst appropriate plantings would be ideal, transforming the sites and appearing attractive for 12 months of the year.

Bridport is a community with sculptors, artists and other creative folk abound. There are also talented gardeners - just see the yearly Melplash prizewinners.

So, how about holding a competition for the best designs that would, once in situ, reflect the talents, history and the quirky nature that is our home town.

Come on Bridport let’s show some pride, we can do better than this!
