IN THE last month British Columbia, Oregon and California have baked under a heat dome, causing massive wildfires.

Germany and other parts of Europe have suffered unprecedented floods. Hunan in China had a year’s worth of rain in a day, and displaced 200,000 people. Turkey, Japan and Northern Ireland have had record- breaking temperatures.

Wildfires in Siberia, drought and famine in Madagascar, the list goes on. Even here we’ve had a bit of a heat wave, though nothing like elsewhere in the world.

Climate change is not in the future, it is on us now. Yet our government are considering opening a new coal field in Northumberland and an oilfield off Shetland.

Burning fossil fuels is the main cause for climate chaos and we need a consistent approach to deal with the emergency.

With this year’s climate conference in November we must get the message to the world leaders that this is the last chance to turn things around. In Bridport we (Friends of the Earth, Transition Town and others) will be holding a Great Big Green week in September with different groups running events to help people tackle and adapt to climate change, and Dorset Climate Action Network are opening homes to showcase ways of living more sustainably.

This month is a trailer for the horror movie to come. Time to take action to prevent it.
