FRESH warnings have been issued as a crack is expected to lead to a cliff fall in 'the near future'.

The West Bay Coastguard Rescue Team was tasked to investigate reports of a potentially dangerous piece of cliff in Seatown at around 6.15pm on Tuesday, July 20.

Once on the scene, the area of the cliff was identified by officers, just to the west of the Anchor Inn in Seatown. Photos and grid references were sent for Solent Coastguard to notify the relevant local authority.

The crack has been developing for some time and the recent weather - rain closely followed by very hot weather - is expected to contribute to a cliff fall in the near future.

Signage is in place at Seatown warning of potential cliff falls and members of the public are reminding to stay vigilant and stay well away from the base of the cliffs.

Coastal erosion that can cause rock falls, landslides and mudslides is a natural part of this environment, and these can happen at any time and without warning.

A spokesman for the West Bay Coastguard Rescue Team said: "The crack in the cliff face is plain to see and whilst this crack has been developing for some time, the recent bouts of rain followed by very hot weather will no doubt contribute to a cliff fall in the near future.

"The Jurassic Coast is a beautiful place to come and visit, but it is also an ever changing and dynamic environment.

"When walking on the cliff path, keep well away from the edge of the cliff, keep your dog on a lead and your children close by. When walking on the beach under the cliffs, the Coastguard recommend that the height of the cliff is the distance you should stay away from it.

"This goes for walkers as well as families looking to spend the day on the beach. Have a fantastic time at the coast this summer."

If you find yourself in difficulty or something gives you cause for concern at the coast, dial 999 and ask for the coastguard.
