"It's been brilliant to see this kind of atmosphere again": Bridport pubs are capitalising on England's success in Euro 2020.

The Three Lions run to the semi-finals of the tournament has captivated the nation, and local pub landlords are reporting fully-booked venues.

England defeated Ukraine 4-0 on Saturday night in the quarter-final - following a historic win against Germany the previous Tuesday.

And now England are one historic win away from their first major silverware since 1966 after coming from behind last night to beat Denmark 2-1 in extra-time on a famous night at Wembley.

Home fans will now dare to dream as the prospect of winning Euro 2020 on home soil moved to within touching distance.

Hospitality venues are having to follow the current restrictions with fans having to be seated at their table and there are restricted numbers for the games as there is no standing room available.

The White Lion in Bridport has been fully booked for England's matches - and is expected to be busy for the final on Sunday, July 11.

Jody Spellman, landlady at the White Lion, said: "We probably could have booked ourselves up several times over. It's been absolutely brilliant - it's been such a nice atmosphere and everyone has been really enjoying themselves. We've had football tunes on pre-match and at half-time.

"Saturday was incredible. After the year we've all had it almost makes it all worthwhile, it's great for people to have something to celebrate.

"The only downside is having to turn people away but we’re so close to the finish line now and the people who were able to able to book have really enjoyed themselves."

She added: “Everybody has stayed in their designated spaces and we haven’t had to ask anybody to leave. We really have tried our hardest to provide a good atmosphere whilst keeping within the rules."

Billy Bayless, manager at the Market House Inn, said they started out showing the games on one TV but soon had to get other sets.

He said: “We’ve had to buy another TV, and then I had to bring my own just to share the love a bit more.

“Loads of people have been in, they've all have been really respectful of the pub and the rules.

“We've had a great atmosphere and no trouble at all. We've had a great time, we've had some lovely people in and some brilliant results so it's been a win-win really.

"We've been completely booked up for the last few games. I wish it could be the Euros every month, that would be good for the pub."

The Pymore Inn had not been showing the games throughout the tournament but has decided to capitalise on the audience desperate to find somewhere to watch - starting with England vs Denmark last night (Thursday).

Landlady Holly Good said: "We knew there'd be a huge demand to watch it and we just thought we need to show it.

“We had to put it on as we just haven’t been as busy the nights when England are playing as everyone’s watching the games.

“We've had about 150 covers booked in the garden with a big screen. We have such a big, outside and safe space where people can social distance and be less likely to contract Covid.

“There's loads of local support and tons of people are coming out - we have such a big garden so luckily we have the space to fit a lot in.

She added: “Regardless of whether you’re a football fan or not, it’s done so much to bring the country together. I really hope it does come home."

Sue Gordon, landlady at the Hope and Anchor, said: “It's been really good for us, every table has been booked for the last few games and we've already got bookings for Sunday too. We’ve had to put someone on the door to stop people coming in.

“Saturday was a great night. After the year we’ve had it’s really great to see such a good atmosphere and everyone enjoying themselves."
