PAUL Pomeroy emerged victorious from the men's final at Lyme Regis Bowls Club's 63rd Open Tournament.

Pomeroy beat son Steve in the final with the latter appearing fatigued having contested two other finals.

Steve Pomeroy held on to his father for most of the match before succumbing.

Weather was glorious all week, except for one day, when some players got extremely wet.

And despite reduced numbers this year, plenty of exciting bowling led up to the finals.

An extremely exciting affair developed in the ladies' final between Chris Doig from Hyde Abbey and Sally Batt from Avon Vale.

At 20-20 on the 20th end this was decided by a very tight measure to secure a fine win for Doig.

The pairs was a contest between Carl Stephens and Steve Pomeroy, both of Lyme Regis plus Lyme's Nola Stephens and Gary Gunstone of Purnells.

This was another very absorbing game with neither pair willing to give an inch, although the Lyme pair were the eventual winners after a hard-fought clash.

The triples was between the Pomeroy family of Steve, Chris and Paul plus Carl Stephens, Angie Thompson of Ilminster and Doig of Hyde Abbey.

Their match produced another superb final with the Pomeroys just being outgunned by their opposition.

Events of this kind don't just happen and a lot of people worked very hard, firstly to get the event organised in such turbulent times and secondly to the actual event itself.

Sue Rowe needs special mention as, she got this whole thing off the ground and with Lesley Broom's help made this week a very smooth operation.

Avril Sherring, our catering manager, along with her band of helpers, was hugely thanked after keeping everyone fed and watered over what would have seemed like a long week.

An event like this does not survive without the bar and Lyme were indebted to Barry Rattenbury, bar manager, plus his bar staff. Again, this involves a long day for those who have to organize it all.

Barry Rattenbury and Steve Pomeroy, the greenkeepers, were also recognised for the excellent condition of the playing surface.

No event such as this would take place without a generous sponsor and, again this year, it was sponsored by Wakely's Funeral Services.

Simon Wakely very kindly graced the club with his presence to present the cups and prizes.

Erica and David Sarson also deserve a mention for their tireless effort in running the raffle which added valuable money to the club's coffers.
