EMERGENCY services have been dealing with a fire near a west Dorset school after commercial waste and 'undesirable items' were set alight.

Firefighters from Bridport were called to the incident at Salwayash at around 11.58am today, where police officers were already at the scene.

Smoke from a bonfire that had been lit the previous night was being carried over to nearby Salway Ash school.

Police are now dealing with the incident.

A spokesperson for Bridport Fire Station said: "On arrival we were met by the police who directed us to the fire.

"The fire was from a controlled burn the previous night. The bonfire contained mixed items including commercial waste, some of which should not be burnt on a bonfire.

"As the smoke from the fire was being carried over the local school and due to undesirable items being burnt, the fire was extinguished. The incident was left with the police who will be contacting the environment agency."
