AROUND 100 volunteers, from children to pensioners, rolled up their sleeves to help clean up the streets of Bridport in the sun.

The 'From Street to Sea' litter pick took place on Sunday, May 30 with residents and visitors alike doing their part to clean up the streets, rivers and beaches of Bridport.

The event was an initiative created by Mayor of Bridport, councillor Ian Bark, with an aim of tackling the litter that has accumulated across town.

In the build up to the event Cllr Bark has been recruiting residents to become Bridport Litter Free Champions - with the aim of achieving coverage for every street in town.

Cllr Bark said: "I was really pleased with how it went. We were able to shift an awful lot of rubbish from green spaces and streets.

"The event was happening right across the town so it's tough to put an exact figure on it, but at its peak we probably had 100 people picking across the town."

He added: "All in all I think it was a real success, it was lovely to see families out litter picking together. We had children as young as five helping out and people in their 70s."

The group of volunteers were tasked with bringing as much litter as they could to Morrisons car park on West Bay Road between 11am and 11.30pm.

Alongside the usual rubbish such as plastics, alcohol bottles and face masks - volunteers cleaned the likes of car wheels, shopping trolleys and even a tent off the streets.

Cllr Bark added: "Keira Tait at Morrisons and Lesley White at the Co-op have both been wonderfully supportive, promoting and recruiting litter pickers. Simon Jordan who co-ordinates the beach cleaning volunteers also did a fantastic job as always.

"We were joined by volunteers from Litter Free Dorset who were amazed at the amount of people who were out helping on a sunny bank holiday weekend.

"People even brought their friends from out of the area who had come to visit to help clean up the streets."

The next From Street to Sea event will take place on Sunday, October 17.
