A MAN was rescued by two coastguard crews after injuring himself while walking along the coast path alone during the evening.

Lyme Regis Coastguard were tasked alongside Beer Coastguard after reports of a man had injured his ankle between Beer and Branscombe.

Both crews were called out yesterday around 8pm to helped the injured walker - who was travelling along the coastpath all the way to Poole.

A spokesman from Lyme Regis Coastguard said: "We were tasked at 8.16pm alongside our colleagues from Beer to a report of a walker with an ankle injury somewhere between Beer and Branscombe.

"The casualty was located on Hooken Steps - the narrow footpath rising from Branscombe Beach to Beer Head.

"The casualty was carefully packaged into the stretcher for a slow and steady carry out to the cliff top. once at the top the casualty, who was walking the coast path to Poole - was happy to set up camp for the night in Beer.

"He was hoping to carry on his journey over the weekend.

"The coastguard strongly recommend using a smartphone app such as What3Words (a proprietary geocode system designed to identify any location with a resolution of about three metres).

"This provides an accurate location of any incident.

"This means that the emergency services can quickly get to the scene of the incident.

"For emergencies on the sea, cliff, river, mud, harbour and beach call 999 and ask for the coastguard."

A spokesman from Beer Coastguard said: "He had twisted his ankle and needed to be stretchered up to the top and await an ambulance paramedic to check his ankle.

He was walking from Exmouth to Poole on his own camping along the way.

He was advised that he needed to rest the ankle before carrying on his walk.

We arranged a pitch at Beer head caravan and camp site for him to pitch his tent and hopefully rest it before resuming his walk.

We advise people to use the what3words app, which helps the emergency services to locate you quickly in an emergency, unfortunately this man did not have the app and initially it was unclear where he was."
