A TASTY ice cream treat for dogs created in Bridport will be available in pet shops across the country after its creators secured a major distribution deal.

Bridport-based ice cream manufacturer Baboo Gelato has secured a listing and distribution deal with well-known national pet wholesaler, Pedigree Wholesale, for its frozen dog treats, Doggy Doggy Yum Yum.

The organic treats will now be able to be purchased from pet shops throughout the UK.

Baboo Gelato was started by husband and wife team, Sam and Annie Hanbury, after they moved to Dorset in 2012. The duo opened their first kiosk in West Bay shortly after and were overwhelmed by the wonderful response from the community. They have since added kiosks in Lyme Regis and Weymouth.

Mr Hanbury said: "We’ve been staggered by the demand for Doggy Doggy since its launch in 2019, and it’s been frustrating to have to turn down so many lovely pet shops who wanted to stock us, as we just didn’t have the national distribution. This all changes with Pedigree Wholesale and we’re delighted to be working with such a well-known and respected company."

The treats are made with peanut butter and bananas, using coconut milk instead of dairy to be kinder to dogs' digestive systems. The ice cream is 100 per cent organic and contains the likes of vitamins C and B, iron, magnesium, copper and potassium.

Mr and Mrs Hanbury believe that Doggy Doggy Yum Yum is the first frozen treat to meet all the dietary and environmental criteria as it is organic, dairy free, gluten free and is environmentally friendly as the container tub is fully recyclable.

Mr Hanbury added: “Much of our sales come from our ice cream kiosks across the Dorset coast which help us to know exactly what customers want - this is how Doggy Doggy Yum Yum came about.

"We found that people were buying ice cream for their dogs, and we were concerned as dogs are somewhat lactose intolerant. We experimented throughout 2019 with different ingredients, before creating an entirely organic and lactose free product.

"We have found limitless demand during the summer not just from pet retailers, but from so many dog friendly cafés, pubs, restaurants, and tourist destinations."
