ART was taken out to the streets in the latest initiative from a Bridport theatre, in spite of challenges posed by the weather.

The Lyric Theatre's latest project, 'Right Up Your Street', launched earlier in May and was designed to put art onto the streets of Bridport – while also collecting stories about how residents have found the lockdown.

Tom Hughes kicked off the pop-up performances last week amidst strong winds with his 'See What You Say Cinema', which saw live streaming projections onto The Woodman pub and The Chapel in the Garden. The images on the projections were created from community contributions via the Lyric’s Facebook page.

Jane Silver Corren also dealt with challenging weather on Tuesday to write songs with onlookers about their stories of lockdown at West Bay whilst the rain fell.

Four more artists will be popping up around Bridport and West Bay in the coming weeks, with Kate Genevieve, Angie Porter and Marina Renee-Cemmick and Sophia Blee hosting events at various locations.

Angie Porter's pop-up, Pressing Paws, will see her hold four days of free portrait sittings for people and their pets. Jane Silver Corren will be dressing up as vegetables and singing songs to raise a smile and a laugh from the art van, which will be transformed into the Salad Ballad Bus. Kate Genevieve will become the 'Medicine Doctor' inviting residents to dream big, aim high and to consider the things to look forward to as lockdown comes to an end. Marina Renee-Cemmick and Sophia Blee will be creating puppets and characters from found materials and residents' stories.

Dates, times and locations will be listed on the Lyric’s website www.the-lyric.com and social media as they are confirmed.

Alongside the pop-ups around town, residents can also take part from home. The Lyric Theatre is encouraging the public to have a go at writing a rhyme, limerick or haiku based on your own lockdown experiences.

These artistic contributions will form part of exhibitions, street art and presentations over the coming year.

Residents can get involved by posting their contributions on Facebook, tagging The Lyric Theatre, and/or sending them via email to admin@the-lyric.com.
