THE Prime Minister’s announcement that restrictions will be further eased on Monday gave us a glimpse towards normality, as the vaccination rollout continues to go from strength to strength.

From Monday 17th May, pubs, hotels, theatres, sports stadiums and so much more will soon welcome guests again. I know business owners across West Dorset will be relieved at this announcement. Raising the number of named care home visitors to five, along with more freedom for outside visits, will also put a smile on so many people’s faces.

The Queen’s Speech on Tuesday provided an ambitious plan for post pandemic recovery and detailed the Government’s strategy to level up the country. The Government has committed to investing in our NHS and in scientific development, allowing us to be at the forefront of global innovation and build on our ongoing vaccine success.

The Government has also announced further investments in our transport networks and connectivity. I look forward to making the case as to how this could benefit our transport needs here in West Dorset such as rejuvenating our railway stations and the Heart of Wessex line. Within my role on the Transport Select Committee, I will be working to ensure West Dorset receives the full benefit of the many initiatives that will emerge.

Increased sentencing for serious and violent offenders will be enacted which, alongside my recently passed Animal Welfare (Sentencing) Act, will make sentences proportionate to the severity of the crime. Additional new laws on animal welfare are also on the Government’s agenda, and I will continue to push for an end to live animal exports. I would encourage anyone who feels as strongly about this particular issue as I do to fill out my online petition at www.chrisloder.co.uk/liveexports
