A NEW plan to secure the future of a Bridport landmark has been drawn up – with new tenants being brought in.

A new plan for the use of Literary and Scientific Institute (LSi) in East Street has been put into motion following a series of consultations. The use of the LSi has been reviewed and reorganised to ensure its financial viability and sustainability.

The new plans will see commercial and charity tenants using the building with community access to events and facilities within the LSi.

The Bridport Area Development Trust (BADT) believes it has found a solution which ensures a viable and sustainable future for the LSi, in which it will continue to make a meaningful and important contribution to the social, economic and cultural life of the town.

Vanessa White, interim chairman of BADT, said: “The intention is to create a new relationship with the building's occupants to deliver something very different and dynamic for Bridport.

“BADT fulfilled one of its primary purposes by rescuing the LSi and preserving the historic building for Bridport and posterity. The trust believes the chosen proposal is consistent with its aims and those of the LSi in the benefits it provides to the community and wider society. We believe the LSi will remain a valuable asset to the town, with this team of tenants bringing training, employment and prestige to Bridport.”

The LSi was already under financial pressure going into 2020, as costs exceeded income from hirings, events and the cafe - the coronavirus pandemic exacerbated these issues and gave the trust new urgency to finding a way forward.

Going forward, the LSi will be occupied by existing tenant Crowdfunder, along with startup charity, 3DCentre, and a financial services company as a commercial tenant.

Both Crowdfunder and 3DC engage with businesses and social, cultural, economic and ecological issues. They are enablers and facilitators of business growth, charitable outreach and individual personal development.

Ms White added: “The new mix of organisations based in the building gives the LSi a clear focus on enabling entrepreneurs in the community to acquire skills and funding for their enterprises and on new opportunities empowering young people to design and build a better future. Those leading these organisations see new and productive partnerships developing in the town.

“BADT now wishes to connect with the community in planning the LSi’s future with the hope that the public will engage with the Trust’s vision of building a better Bridport.”
