SMOKE from an out of control bonfire created a hazard to drivers on a major road just outside of Bridport.
Officers from the Dorset Police Neighbourhood Policing Team spotted the fire whilst out on patrol yesterday afternoon.
The large, unattended bonfire - described by Bridport Police as out of control - was causing a hazard to drivers on the A35 at Morcombelake, sending smoke across the carriageway and posing a potential risk to nearby hedges.
A crew from Charmouth Fire Station arrived at 2.14pm and dealt with the fire with assistance from Dorset Police officers.
The firefighters used two hose reel jets and hay drags to extinguish the fire - which came to a stop at 2.50pm.
A spokesperson for the Dorset and Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service said: "Dorset Police requested our attendance at land off the A35 at Morcombelake yesterday at 2.14pm, due to an unattended bonfire sending smoke across the carriageway.
"A crew from Charmouth attended and used hay drags to break up the stack as well as two hose reel jets to extinguish the fire. Our stop was at 2.50pm."
