A RECORD-BREAKING number of Dorset children have been offered their first choice school.

Yesterday, parents across the county found out which primary, first, junior or middle school their child will be going to in September 2021.

Of the 4,482 applications, 99.09 per cent of parents received the good news that their child gained one of their three preferences, compared to last year's figure of 98.8 per cent. This includes places for those starting school for the first time, transferring from infant to junior school and transferring from first to middle schools.

Of the 3,105 applications for a reception place at primary, infant and first schools put into Dorset Council, 98.9 per cent have secured a place at one of their preferred schools.

One hundred per cent of children got their first choice for junior school, 97.5 per cent for middle school and 94 per cent for reception.

Councillor Andrew Parry, Dorset Council portfolio holder for children, education and early years, said: "It is an important day for young people, as well as their parents and carers, as they find out which school they will be joining in September.

"We’re very pleased that Dorset has seen more pupils than ever being offered their first choice of school. It is great news for children, and their parents and carers.

"I’d like to wish all Dorset students the very best of luck as they get ready to join their new schools."

Those who applied online - more than 96.6 per cent - can now see their outcome on the school admission portal and parents who sent a paper application form should have received a letter or an email if this was supplied as part of the application. To access the school admission portal, go to the Dorset Council website.

Any parents who failed to get their highest preference school and are wanting to appeal against the decision can do so on the Dorset Council school admission page and fill in an online form detailing your reasons for wishing your child attend your preferred school and the grounds for your appeal.
