FIRE service bosses in Dorset have released safety information reminding the public what to do in case of an emergency at home.

The key steps to remember are to ensure homes are fitted with a working smoke alarm, and to take care when cooking by not leaving it unattended.

In case of emergency firefighters said it was important to plan and practice an escape route and make bedtime checks.

Other tips include never to overload electrics, being careful when using candles and have chimneys swept regularly.

Dorset & Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service watch manager, Jason Browne said: "It's of course important to highlight that if in any doubt about your own safety, your capabilities, or the capabilities of the firefighting equipment a fire should not be tackled.

"The door to the room involved should be shut, evacuate the building and call the fire service.”
