DORSET residents are being warned of flooding as strong winds lash the county.

On the west coast of the county - particularly Lyme Regis and West Bay Harbour - waves are forecast to overtop sea defences with sea spray expected as a result of high tides and strong winds.

Residents are urged to take care along beaches and to be careful if walking or driving near the coast.

Environment Agency officials say the forecast wind is up to Force 8 West South Westerlies.

Flooding to roads is expected and may apply two to four hours either side of the high tide.

"We believe there is a possibility of flooding at all locations across the West Coast of Dorset, particularly at Lyme Regis and West Bay," a spokesman said.

"Other locations along the coast may also be affected. We are closely monitoring the situation. Incident response staff are checking defences.

"Please stay away from large waves and be careful along beaches, promenades and coastal footpaths and roads."
