DORSET Council says it did better than any other authority with its recent award of £19 million in government grants for work on ‘greening’ its own buildings and operations.

Cabinet brief holder for climate Cllr Ray Bryan says the grant amounted to 36 per cent of the total funding awarded by the Government in the funding round.

He says that by comparison the next best was Leicester with £8.3m while Devon achieved £4.6m; Somerset £7,000 with nothing for the Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole council area.

Cllr Bryan said the grant success illustrated the benefit of having what he described as ‘shovel ready’ schemes where grant applications can be made quickly.

He has said in the past that if Dorset is to achieve its target it would need to win around £30million in Government funding.

Around 3,000 people have responded to the Dorset climate consultation with around 80 per cent of those said to support the council’s 2040 date for becoming carbon neutral, ten years earlier than the national target.
