A WEATHER warning for snow and ice is in force across Dorset today.

The Met Office imposed a yellow weather warning as temperatures dropped overnight, amid warnings that icy patches and wintry showers may cause travel disruption.

The warning covers the majority of the county including Weymouth, Portland, Chickerell, Dorchester Bridport, Lyme Regis and most of West Dorset.

It is currently in place until 11am this morning.

And while the mercury is not expected to drop below zero, Met Office forecasters say it will feel much colder as bitter winds continue to lash through the county.

Meanwhile, drivers are warned that conditions could be hazardous due to icy patches, while and railways could also be affected.

Pedestrians and cyclists are urged to take care.

Meanwhile, health chiefs are urging residents to check on frail or elderly neighbours who could be at risk during cold weather.

Dr Owen Landeg, group leader, extreme events and health protection at Public Health England, said: “Cold weather can have a serious impact on health, particularly for older people and those with heart and lung problems, as it increases the risks of heart attacks, strokes and chest infections.

“So it’s really important during this particularly cold period, to keep checking on frail or older neighbours or relatives, especially those living alone or who have serious illnesses.

“Make a call, or socially-distanced doorstep visit if they live close by, to remind them to heat their home to at least 18 Celsius, 64.4 Fahrenheit and to keep up to date with the forecast. It’s also helpful to check they have enough food and drinks and any medicines they need.”
