FIRE crews were called out to a blaze which started in a Bridport kitchen.

Two Bridport fire engines attended the property fire at 7.22pm yesterday evening after receiving a call that a grill had caught fire in the property's kitchen. On arrival the crews were met by the property owner who was waiting outside.

The owner had smothered the fire before exiting the building, preventing the fire from spreading. The crews checked over the property and ensured it was safe and ventilated.

A spokesman for Bridport Fire Station said: "Thankfully their quick thinking of smothering the fire before exiting the building prevented a serious incident.

"Cooking fires make up half of all accidental fires in the home. Keep the oven, hob and grill clean and in good working order. A build-up of fat and grease can easily lead to a fire. If a pan catches fire – don’t take any risks. Turn the heat off if it’s safe to do so. Never throw water on it."
