A PORSCHE driver claimed he was unaware of the layout of the A35 in West Dorset after he was caught overtaking two vehicles after the lanes had already merged.
Aaron Childs was behind the wheel of a black Porsche as he drove eastbound on the A35 Bridport Bypass towards Weymouth at 6.16pm on Sunday, August 30, 2020.
Dashcam footage, taken by a motorist, showed the sunny and dry conditions on the A35 and the road merging from two lanes into one lane.
It then shows Child’s black Porsche overtaking two vehicles on the solid white lines and manoeuvring left to complete the overtake.
Video of the incident was submitted to Dorset Police as part of their Operation Snap service, which allows drivers to submit video or images of a motoring offence.
Prosecuting, Louise Meaker, told Weymouth Magistrates’ Court it was unclear what speed Childs was travelling at, but noted it was clear it was at a faster speed than the two vehicles.
Dashcam footage showed one of the vehicles was travelling between 47mph and 49mph on the major A-road, which has a speed limit of 50mph.
Childs, 31, of Rowans Park, Lymington, who did not appear in court, pleaded guilty to the charge of driving without due care or attention.
Upon receiving a letter from Dorset Police about his motoring offence in September 2020, he wrote to the force to apologise for his actions.
In a letter read out by the legal advisor, Childs said: "It was the first time I had driven that route and the short length of dual carriageway I was proceeding down took me by surprise, the dual carriageway was ending sooner than anticipated and there was no room to merge so had to accelerate slightly to find the gap to merge.
"But unfortunately, as seen on the witnesses dash cam footage, the dual carriageway had ended before I managed to merge.
"In hindsight, I know that manoeuvre was a silly one to do and am very sorry to have made it."
He added he was ‘very sorry’ and has had a ‘long hard think’ about his actions and driving manner.
It was noted that Childs did drive at an ‘excessive speed’ but no injury or damage was caused and there was ‘no high level of traffic’ on the A35 during the incident.
Magistrates endorsed Child's driving licence with five points and ordered him to pay a £368 fine, £37 victim surcharge and costs of £110.
