DORSET residents could 'be part of history' as they are invited to apply for one of the thousands of jobs that are available to help carry out the 2021 census.

The census is a once-in-a-decade survey that gives the Office for National Statistics the most accurate estimation of the population and households and census 2021 will take place on March 21.

Understanding the needs of the nation helps everyone from central government to organisations such as councils and health authorities, plan and fund public services.

Information from the census is used to help lots of people and organisations do their work. Charities and voluntary organisations often use it as evidence to get funding. It also helps businesses to understand their customers and decide where to open new services.

The census field operation will be rolled out in late March and into April, following up with households who have not completed their census form.

Field officers will never enter a house, will socially distance from members of the public and be equipped with personal protective equipment in line with government guidance.

Pete Benton, census director of operations, said: "The decennial census is a little over two months away and the ONS is hiring thousands of people in a range of exciting temporary roles to make it a success.

"There will be more than 30,000 field staff at the height of the census operation this spring and I would love the census field force to include people from every corner of England and Wales.

"If you like being out in the community and talking to people, this is the role for you. They are Covid safe, with staff equipped with PPE in line with government guidance.

"Every post filled will help ensure communities across the south west are represented – this is your chance to be part of history."

Census officers will offer help and advice to those who need it. They will also remind people that their census response is required by law. Flexible hours are available, although some evening and weekend work will be expected.
