HUGE waves breached flood defences in West Bay at the weekend and environment officers are out inspecting the damage today.

Powerful waves overtopped flood defences in West Bay on Saturday night, throwing sand up onto The Esplanade.

Environment Agency officers were called to the area as there was a risk of flooding, however, no properties have reportedly been flooded.

Flood protection work was completed in October last year at West Bay to help reduce the chances of properties and businesses flooding.

A spokesman for the Environment Agency said: "We responded to high waves creating a risk of flooding in West Bay this weekend. There was some overtopping of the flood defences at The Esplanade due to the power of the waves but no reports of property flooding.

"Staff are onsite today inspecting the beach."

Emergency services were called to the Chiswell area of Portland on Saturday night due to crashing waves battering Chesil Beach.

Three Coastguard officers were injured after they were hit by a freak wave, one of which was seriously injured and was take to hospital for treatment.
