A BRIDPORT supermarket teamed up with local veterans and schools to raise more than £4,000 for the Poppy Appeal.

With many of the volunteers of the Royal British Legion having to self isolate this year, Morrisons in Bridport came up with several ways to raise funds for their cause.

Through a combination of the usual collectors in store, creative displays made by local school children and members of staff participating in fundraising events, the group were able to raise £4,439.

Keira Tait, community champion at Bridport Morrisons, said: "This year more than ever we wanted to support the Royal British Legion with their fundraising, as most of their volunteers are elderly and unable due to Covid.

"I contacted the local schools for support in this event and they really came through."

Year 4 pupils from Bridport Primary School made two poppy wreaths with each child colouring a poppy, whilst children from St Mary's School each drew and decorated their own flag. This was all displayed in the store.

A few dedicated knitters also made and donated their own knitted poppies which also helped towards the amount raised.

In addition to this, several members of staff took part in this year's Poppy Run. Participants ran or walked 5 kilometres and raised £325 in the process, an amount that is set to be doubled through Morrisons Match Fund.
