West Dorset residents are being urged to donate to a campaign supporting the county's older people at risk of fuel poverty.

Dorset Community Action's annual Surviving Winter Appeal raises donations for people suffering from the combined effects of fuel poverty and social isolation.

Stats released by the Office for National Statistics reveal that last year there were 730 cold weather related deaths in Dorset.

Many self-reliant older people are at risk, particularly if they turn down their heating to save money or become trapped indoors due to bad weather and icy road conditions. This year there is additional risk posed by the pandemic.

The charity said it urgently needs residents to make a donation to help provide warmth and comfort for vulnerable older people in the community.

Meanwhile, those aged over 60 who are in fuel poverty can apply for support. Residents aged over 50 who meet the winter fuel poverty criteria, have significant health conditions, are on the highest level of benefits and have little current chance of improving life circumstances can also apply.

To donate visit www.dorsetcommunityfoundation.org/appeals/surviving-winter send a cheque or bankers draft to: The Surviving Winter Appeal, Dorset Community Foundation, The Spire, High Street, Poole, BH15 1DF - all cheques need to be made out to the Dorset Community Foundation.

The Foundation is working with Dorset Citizens Advice branches to dispense donations for older people in need across the county.
