MOTORISTS are set to face disruption on a busy Dorset A-road next week as part of resurfacing works.

The A37 Stratton Bypass, north of Dorchester, is used by thousands of drivers daily for commuting or travelling to and from Dorset.

Due to the importance of the road and how frequently it is used by drivers, Dorset Council wants the 0.2 mile section of the northbound carriageway to be resurfaced.

The northbound stretch of A37 Stratton Bypass will be shut between junctions for Ash Hill and Dorchester Road for five days.

The A-road will be closed between 9.30am and 3.30pm on Monday, October 5 until Friday, October 9 in a bid to minimise disruption at peak times.

Two-way traffic lights will be in place in both directions with motorists travelling onto the southbound side of the A37 to divert around the roadworks.

The consultation document states: “The road will be subject to traffic control daily between the hours of 9.30am and 3.30pm but it will be unrestricted overnight and at weekends. A contraflow system will be in place on the southbound carriageway using two-way lights with a convoy vehicle to assist traffic flow, as marked in orange on the map.”

“In the current financial climate, the highways service has had to focus its budget on targeting the most damaged sections of road and areas with safety issues.”

Dorset Council adds that the A37 Stratton Bypass is on a revised list of roads which are in a ‘deteriorating condition’ and are essential to help keep life-saving medicine, equipment, supplies and key workers travelling safely across the county.
