Charities in Dorset have set up helplines for people in need during the coronavirus pandemic.

A number of Dorset charities have helplines available and are regularly updating their websites with information regarding the COVID-19 outbreak.

A big concern for charities in the area is the mental wellbeing of the public as they are following Government advice and are isolated from their loved ones.

They want to emphasise the importance of speaking up if anyone feels sad or lonely and trying to care for each other during this difficult time.

The Samartians, a mental health charity aimed at providing emotional support, has said: "Whilst we are physically isolated, it’s more important than ever for us to feel socially connected, so try and reach out to people to talk, and try to be there to listen to others."

The main message that the charities want to put across is that we all need to remain calm and follow the advice that we have been given.

They all recognise that this is a very stressful time for everyone, particularly the elderly, people living alone, or those with physical or mental health conditions, and we all need to support one another as best we can.

The Silver Line, a charity aimed at helping older people who struggle with loneliness and isolation, has said: "It’s completely understandable to be concerned about coronavirus and the impact it might have on you and those you care about, particularly if you’re living with health conditions.

"Try to stay calm and keep following good hygiene practises like washing your hands regularly."

Childline, a counselling service for children and young people, has updated their website with exercises, games, yoga and creative outlets for members of the public to use to calm themselves down and lower their anxiety.

They have said: "The news can be scary, and it can be hard to know what’s true and whether you should be scared. Whatever you’re going through, Childline wants to help."
